Flood Mitigation and Drainage System Upgrade at Sungai Pinang

Completed

Sungai Pinang is a vital asset to Penang, serving as a key connection between the interior of the island and the sea. Historically, it was essential for Malay fishermen in the 18th century and provided a resting point for traders arriving through the Penang Straits. Today, the river remains crucial to the livelihoods of inshore fishermen, who rely on it daily. The objective of this project is to ensure the sustainability of the river for both current and future generations, while mitigating the risk of flooding. In response, the government has initiated the construction of a retention pond near the river to safeguard the area from potential flood risks.

We have been appointed to oversee the successful delivery of this project, ensuring it meets all specifications and is completed within the designated timeframe. The scope of work included the excavation of 8,500 cubic meters of earth to create the retention pond. Additionally, we installed a pump and pump house to regulate water inflow and outflow, as well as constructed a drainage system and roadworks for public access.

Given the critical nature of the project particularly since heavy rainfall lasting more than two days can cause Sungai Pinang to overflow. Our team prioritized completing the work on schedule and to the highest standards. The project has now been successfully completed, serving a dual purpose: it stores overflow water from Sungai Pinang and functions as a recreational area for the public.
