Flood Mitigation and Drainage System Upgrade at Sungai Pinang

Overview
Flood Mitigation Works & Drainage System Upgrade at Transfer Road & Hutton Lane
Completed
Penang Island, a coastal state, is inherently vulnerable to the risks of tsunamis and flooding. The region has experienced significant flooding and tsunami events in the past. In an effort to mitigate these risks and prevent future occurrences, the government has initiated a comprehensive upgrade of the drainage system, with a particular focus on the drainage network along Jalan Transfer, which runs directly from the city to the sea.
We were entrusted with the responsibility of executing this critical project, which primarily involved work along the roadside. The project required the excavation and installation of various sizes of precast box culverts to channel excess water back to the sea. Additionally, we were tasked with diverting sewer lines and relocating power and telecommunications cables, which added complexity to the work. Furthermore, we constructed a tidal gate within the sea to regulate water movement and prevent backflow into the drainage system, thus reducing the risk of flooding in the city.
Given the challenging work environment—tight spaces, limited access, and heavy, congested traffic—the team had to adopt a precise and efficient approach to ensure the successful completion of the project. Thanks to our experience and strong project management skills, we were able to deliver the project on time and without major disruptions to the public. As a result, Penang now benefits from a reliable drainage system capable of effectively channelling overflow water to the sea, significantly reducing the likelihood of flooding incidents.
